Across the US, legislation aiming to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated systems is starting to emerge. While most of these efforts are at the state and local level, with California, New York City, DC, and Colorado all proposing legislation, some efforts have also been made at the federal level.

The focus of the legislation is varied; some focus on specific sectors, such as HR tech and insurance, while others take a sector-agnostic approach. However, these regulations all share the same goal: to make AI and automated systems safer, and increase the accountability of those designing, developing, and deploying them.
