What are Guardian Agents?

Guardian agents are autonomous governance agents built into our platform that provide real time monitoring and runtime enforcement across your AI systems. They observe every action your AI agents take, evaluate it against your governance policies, and intervene when a violation or risk threshold is detected. Gartner recognized Holistic AI as a Representative Vendor in its Market Guide for Guardian Agents.

Every module in the platform, Identify, Protect, and Enforce, is powered by guardian agents. They are not a standalone feature. They are the execution layer that makes governance operational.

Sentinel agents

Sentinel agents handle the observability side of governance. They run continuously across your AI environment and perform the following:

  • Anomaly detection - Flags deviations from expected agent behavior patterns
  • Risk scoring - Evaluates risk levels across running AI systems in real time
  • Compliance monitoring - Surfaces gaps against active regulatory frameworks
  • Security monitoring - Watches for prompt injection attempts, jailbreak patterns, and unsafe outputs
  • Data access tracking - Ensures agents stay within approved data boundaries
  • Drift detection - Identifies performance degradation and model drift in production

Sentinel agents are passive by design. They observe, log, and score without interrupting agent workflows. Every signal they capture feeds into your governance dashboards and compliance reporting.

Operative agents

Operative agents handle enforcement. When a sentinel agent flags a risk that crosses a predefined threshold, operative agents execute a response automatically:

  • Blocking - Stops requests that are unsafe before they reach execution
  • Quarantining - Isolates suspicious outputs for human review before they move downstream
  • Revoking - Removes access when an agent oversteps its authorized boundaries
  • Redirecting - Reroutes workflows away from compromised or failing components
  • Kill switch - Shuts down a runaway agent process immediately
  • Remediation - Applies corrective actions from predefined policy playbooks
  • Escalation - Sends full context to a human reviewer when an automated response is not enough

Operative agents provide sub second response times. The enforcement happens at runtime, at the point where risk actually occurs, not after the fact in a scheduled audit.

How they work together

Sentinel agents generate continuous risk signals. Operative agents consume those signals and act on them based on the policies you configure. You define what gets monitored, what thresholds trigger action, and what type of response each scenario requires.

This creates a closed loop from detection to action without manual intervention. Governance runs continuously, not conditionally.

Where they operate

Guardian agents apply across your full AI infrastructure:

  • Identify - Detects shadow AI systems entering your environment, flags unregistered agents or models, and surfaces ungoverned deployments
  • Protect - Monitors model behavior during testing and adversarial assessments, flags unexpected responses or safety failures in real time
  • Enforce - Maintains runtime compliance after deployment and ensures deployed agents continue operating within approved policy boundaries

The platform supports governance across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on premise environments. Guardian agents monitor systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, open source models, and custom builds without vendor lock in. One governance layer covers everything.
