The agency is scrutinizing how these systems simulate human-like relationships, monetize engagement, handle personal data, and enforce safety policies.
Chatbots are increasingly positioned as companions during a time of widespread loneliness. But reports show they can enable inappropriate interactions with minors, including romantic dialogue. Safety lapses raise profound ethical, privacy, and mental-health concerns. The FTC’s move comes as lawmakers step up pressure on companies over child safety.

Victims range from everyday consumers to public figures like Dr. Rachel Goldman, Oprah Winfrey, and Gayle King whose likenesses were manipulated to promote fraudulent weight-loss products. The problem is accelerating as tools for cloning voices and faces become cheap and accessible.
Deepfakes spread false medical advice, financial scams, and reputational harm at scale, exploiting vulnerable consumers and damaging brand reputation. Victims struggle to get content taken down, even with legal teams.
AI misuse is not just a technical issue but a systemic one. Platforms lack consistent monitoring, while policymakers lag in delivering frameworks that protect citizens. MIT researchers have developed FlowER (Flow matching for Electron Redistribution), a generative AI model that predicts chemical reactions while respecting physical laws like conservation of mass and electrons. Unlike traditional AI models, which sometimes “invent” or drop atoms, FlowER explicitly tracks electrons throughout the reaction process to ensure realistic outputs.
